Recently, I dedusted my 2011 iMac, put it on a spare desk. ![]() Apple makes good hardware obsolete through software updates Spending three thousand dollars on a computer limiting my options, pushing expensive proprietary gadgets, and offering a worse experience for professional software and web development use. I lose my escape key and complete set of function keys while getting nothing in return. They are designed for Apple to make money with their Apple Pay service. Some of the “Innovation” like the Touch Bar with Touch ID seem just awful, and borderline contemptuous to me. I don’t know how many times I tripped over a cable and was glad it did not pull my laptop off the table. This is also where Apple hardware becomes worse: generally I get fewer and fewer connectivity ports, and I’m supposed to have a bunch of expensive Apple certified dongles and periphery around to get things like ethernet or a good old extra USB port. The connectivity ports are different, etc. There have been advances in display and GPU technology. To be fair, the surface level specs are not the whole story.
